A major concentration in German consists of at least 24 credits, usually eight courses at the 3200-level. Students may choose a concentration in German literature or in German studies.
For the MAJOR in GERMAN STUDIES, the following courses are required:
- Building Language Skills Through Culture I and II and Capstone in German Studies (3233, 3234 and 4246 [take this course in your senior year and/or upon return from study abroad]).
- Either German Culture and Civilization or Germans in Africa, Blacks in German-Speaking Countries (German 3251 or 3258).
- Three advanced courses in language and/or culture (chosen from German 3200, 3231, 3245, 3261W, 3264W, 3265, 3292, 3293 (on a non-literary topic), 3294 (on a non-literary topic), or 3295 (on a non-literary topic)
- One of the following literature courses (chosen from German 3253W, 3254W, 3255W, 3293 (on a literary topic), 3294 (on a literary topic), or 3295 (on a literary topic).
- Normally, only two courses taught in English may count toward the German studies major.
- Study or work abroad is also required.
For the MAJOR in GERMAN LITERATURE, the following courses are required:
- Building Language Skills Through Culture I and II and Capstone in German Studies (German 3233, 3234 and 4246 [take this course in your senior year and/or upon return from study abroad]).
- Three literature courses (chosen from German 3253W, 3254W, 3255W, 3293 (on a literary topic), 3294 (on a literary topic), or 3295 (on a literary topic).
- One advanced language/culture course (chosen from German 3200, 3231, 3245, 3261W, 3265, 3292, 3293 (on a non-literary topic), 3294 (on a non-literary topic), or 3295 (on a non-literary topic).
- One course taught in English (German 3251, 3258, or 3264W). Normally, only one course taught in English may count toward the literature major.
- Study or work abroad is also required.
The Information Literacy Requirement is satisfied through the completion of the following courses:
- One course of 3233, 3234; and
- One of 3252W, 3253W, 3254W, 3255W, 3261W, 3264W; and
- 4246
