FAQ for French Undergraduate Programs

-What can I do with a French minor or major?

A wide variety of careers are open to you after a minor or a major in French. The government is one of the largest employers for people with foreign language skills. You can also work in Industry and Commerce, Travel and Tourism, Interpretation and Translation, Service and Education, or Arts, Media, and Entertainment.

Consult the brochure made for French majors by the Center for Career Development, and make an appointment with a Career Coach to receive more information.

-I would like to become a French teacher. What can I do?

There is a real shortage of teachers; conditions are excellent for language teachers in Connecticut. There are two ways to become certified at UConn; the Integrated Bachelors/Masters (IB/M) program allows you to receive a certification in French Language Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in only five years, while the Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG) allows you to obtain this certification and Masters degree after completion of your B.A. in French. For more information, click on the above links or contact Michele Back (Associate Professor, World Languages Education) at michele.back@uconn.edu.

– Can I take an upper-level class if I am fluent but didn’t take French in HS and I don’t have the prerequisites?

Yes, absolutely. Some 3000 level French courses will be taught in English as of the Fall 2024 semester. Other courses are taught in French, with the following prerequisite: three years of high school French, or French 1104, or instructor consent. The course catalog is being updated to indicate which courses are taught in French and which courses are taught in English. In the meantime, for a current list of courses indicating the correct language of instruction, and to discuss which French course would be best for you, please consult one of the French advisors.

-How can I practice French outside of the classroom?

Take advantage of the UConn French club meetings and of the opportunities for French conversation, watch French movies and TV series, listen to podcasts in French, practice on TV5 Monde or RFI, play or watch videogames in French on Twitch. We recommend the following TV series and podcasts:

-I took one or two French ECE courses at my high school, how can I transfer my credits?

It is easy: at UConn, your ECE courses will automatically be accepted, and French 3250 and 3268 count towards the French minor or major. If you don’t go to UConn, you should consult the ECE database to learn how to transfer your UConn ECE credits.
