UConn is ideally situated in a rural environment near the coast of New England within 2.5 hours of New York and 1.5 hours to Boston, 1 hour to Atlantic beaches and towns (Long Island Sound) and 2 hours to the mountains (Berkshires, Vermont and New Hampshire). The German Studies Graduate Program draws on several centers of scholarship, culture and learning to pursue a considerable variety of projects, with libraries, institutes and archives readily accessible. Beyond those at the University of Connecticut, you can access resources at Harvard, Yale, and Brown Universities, the “Five Colleges” in the Amherst-Northampton area, and New York City, among others.
During the academic year, the German Section hosts or co-organizes a number of talks, presentations, and readings. Past visitors and presenters include Dr. José Aldemar Álvarez Valencia (Universidad del Valle, Colombia), Esther Dischereit (Vienna), Ervin Malakaj (University of British Columbia), Ngondi Kamatuka (University of Kansas), Lora Wildenthal (Rice University), Christina Gerhardt (University of Hawai’i), Dwight Lewis (University of Minnesota), Louis Menand (Harvard University), Stephen Dowden (Brandeis University), Janet Bauer (Trinity College), Ralf B. Korte (Berlin) and Olga Grjasnowa (Berlin).
Past conferences, symposia and workshops include:
Human Rights and Global Challenges (2022)
Double Presentation by Prof. Sigrid Köhler (2022)
Decolonizing Together? Awareness, Theory, Practice – Symposium (2021)
Radical Futures – Imagining the Media of Tomorrow (2021)
Human Rights in Times of Crisis (2020)
With the German Studies Colloquium the section also provides a platform for graduate students and professors to exchange ideas and information on research, conferences, publications and career opportunities. The schedule of talks and workshops becomes available in September and January.
The section will organize visits to nearby conferences and events, depending on graduate students’ interests. It encourages active participation for advanced graduate students at national conferences, workshops and other venues.
