Francophone & Maghreb Studies, Early Modern Studies, Women in the French Enlightenment, Gender Studies, Modern French and North African Historiography, Race and Politics, Islam in France, Postcolonial studies.

Biography 

Mary Beth Allen is an Assistant Professor of French & Francophone studies in the Department of Literatures, Cultures & Languages at UConn. Her research centers on 17th- and 18th-century French and Mediterranean Studies, especially diplomacy and cross-cultural encounters. She is currently working on a book titled “Diplomacy and Culture in the Early Modern Mediterranean: Mouley Ismaël’s Marriage Proposal for a Daughter of Louis XIV,” and has recently published on the racialized representation of Mūlāy Ismā’īl and on laïcité in France. She teaches courses on French and Francophone language, culture, and history. Professor Allen taught at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Virginia and Smith College before joining the faculty at UConn.
