Frequently Asked Questions
-
How Do I Start?
Define your personal and academic objectives, then decide on the type and location of the program that suits you. Whether you go for a semester, year or during the summer will depend on your curricular needs and your finances. The type of program you select may also be restricted by your linguistic ability. Start the process by discussing your plans with your academic advisor and with the study abroad advisor.
-
Am I Eligible?
Most study abroad programs are open to all students in good standing, providing they have fulfilled the prerequisite requirements necessary for the specific program. Applicants must show evidence of maturity, stability, self-discipline, and strong academic motivation. Many programs are open to sophomores but most are more suitable for juniors or seniors.
-
Can I Get UConn Credit?
ABSOLUTELY!! Students enrolling in an approved program through UCONN's Study Abroad Office retain continuous registration at UCONN while abroad, earning direct UCONN credits. It is, however, up to the student's academic department and school or college to decide how the credits may be used to fulfill major or college requirements. The number of credits you can earn depends on the program you choose. With proper advisor assistance, you can choose the program that best accommodates your plan of study and doesn't interrupt your normal progress toward graduation.
-
What Does It Cost?
The cost of studying abroad varies from program to program. UCONN's own programs are usually the most cost effective and include everything--tuition, room and board, airfare and group activities.
-
Can I Use My Financial Aid?
Yes. University of Connecticut degree students enrolled through the Study Abroad Office are eligible for their normal financial aid, except for work study. All questions regarding aid should be addressed to the Financial Aid office, 486-2819, as early as possible. Note: UCONN recipients of Nutmeg, Day of Pride, Presidential, Chancellor, Deans and Leadership scholarships may use them ONLY for programs in Paris, Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany), Regensburg (Germany), Florence, and Granada. Contact the Scholarship Office, 860-486-3299, for more information.
-
Do I Need To Speak Another Language?
That depends on the program. Some programs require language proficiency in the country of study. Other programs conduct core course instruction in English, while requiring students to take a language course along with the specialized curriculum. Programs in Paris, Florence, and Granada, require a solid background in the language of the country.

Where Will I Live?
Living arrangements vary from one location to another. Accommodations include university residence halls, pensions, private homes and apartments.
