Undergraduate German Major
Current Undergraduate German Major
A major concentration in German consists of at least 24 credits, usually eight courses at the 200-level. Students may choose a concentration in German literature or in German studies.
For the MAJOR in GERMAN STUDIES, the following courses are required:
- Building Language Skills Through Culture I and II and Capstone in German Studies (233, 234 and 246 [take this course in your senior year and/or upon return from study abroad]).
- Either German Culture and Civilization or Germans in Africa, Blacks in German-Speaking Countries (German 251 or 258).
- Three advanced courses in language and/or culture (chosen from German 200, 231, 232, 245, 281W, 284W, 285, 290, 293 (on a non-literary topic), 296 (on a non-literary topic), or 298 (on a non-literary topic).
- One of the following literature courses (chosen from German 252W, 253W, 254W, 255W, 293 (on a literary topic), 296 (on a literary topic), or 298 (on a literary topic).
- Or you can substitute 3 one-credit Linkage through Language courses in German.
- Normally, only two courses taught in English may count toward the German studies major.
- Study or work abroad is also required.

- One course taught in English (German 251, 258, or 280W). Normally, only one course taught in English may count toward the literature major.
- Study or work abroad is also required.
The Information Literacy Requirement is satisfied through the completion of the following courses:
- One course of 233, 234; and
- one of 252W, 253W, 254W, 255W, 281W, 284W; and
- 246
Old Undergraduate German Major (for students who entered UConn before the Academic Year 2005/06)
Undergraduate students must meet the requirements as they were at the time the student entered that school or college. However, all undergraduate students have the option to follow a more current catalog.
