Teacher Certification

Majoring in French offers you a great opportunity to become a K-12 French teacher!

There are two ways to become certified at UConn; the Integrated Bachelors/Masters (IB/M) program allows you to receive a certification in French Language Education and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in only five years, while the Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG) allows you to obtain this certification and Masters degree after completion of your B.A. in French. Here are some testimonials from French teachers who graduated from UConn’s French program and the Neag School of Education:

“The IB/M World Language program provided me with the tools and methods necessary to have a strong start to my teaching career. I felt very prepared after my student teaching assignment in a proficiency-based classroom, and went into my career with the practices and knowledge to succeed. I have since implemented research-based techniques that have helped me become a leader within my school’s World Language department.”

–Anna Malkin (IB/M, 2016)
Newtown, CT

“Thanks to the IB/M French program I was able to discover a plethora of strategies, theories and resources that were extremely helpful as I first started teaching almost two years ago. Despite the unusual context (COVID-19) during which me and my cohort had to complete the program I was able to learn so much from both the classes offered at the program and the internships and student teaching. We were always supported – academically and emotionally- by the amazing members of the program during these challenging times. Being part of such a small group of incredible people was also a great way to build strong relationships with each other – so much so that we still keep in touch today!”

–Christophe Graupner (IB/M, 2022)
Tolland, CT

“I received industry best-practice instruction on Second Language Acquisition theories, which allowed me to learn and become proficient in the “High Leverage Teaching Practices” associated with effective World Languages Teaching. Because the program was small and personal, I also received tremendous support on my projects […] also, I was given connections to the industry through events and opportunities such as a Language Conference at CCSU, the COLT annual conference, AATF Connecticut Chapter and others. The cohort model was very supportive and enjoyable, and I would recommend the TCPCG experience to anyone interested in becoming a high school teacher in Connecticut. I felt very prepared as a first-year teacher straight out of the program, and was able to find my dream position as a teacher of French in my hometown, immediately upon graduation.”
