Graduate Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies

The department offers courses in literature and culture leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies, German, Italian, and Spanish. Programs are available in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies in cooperation with the Department of English and in Medieval Studies in cooperation with the departments of Art, English, History, and Philosophy. There also is supporting work in Greek and Latin.

Graduate students are taught in small seminar settings by a world-renowned faculty and receive constant mentoring as they embark on a path of academic excellence. Library facilities include the Homer Babbidge Library and the Dodd Center. Both contain outstanding collections of texts and commentaries in the literature and culture of the French Renaissance and the Spanish Golden Age. The Latin American Collection is particularly strong in the Mexican, Chilean, and Argentine areas. There is a fine collection of German literature of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. In addition, the Library houses an extensive collection of videos and cultural materials, and facilities for viewing them. Holdings in Italian literature and in intellectual history are extensive. The Risorgimento pamphlet collection of the Dodd Center stands out as one of the best available outside of Italy.

The department also places a great deal of emphasis in preparing students for a teaching career in higher education and provides seminars and workshops on foreign language pedagogy and on the use of computer assisted language learning such as the recently offered blended learning course on the use of web-based social networking tools for language, literature and culture courses. Faculty with a specialty in Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Pedagogy also provide assistance to all graduate students on an on-going basis.
