Something of a theatrical trademark, LATIN AMERICAN THEATRE TODAY is a tradition that was started by George Woodyard more than twenty years ago, in April 1982, at the University of Kansas. Little did he know at the time that his success in bringing together Latin American and U.S. playwrights, theatre groups, critics and students would result in four more conferences with the same name and held at the same university. In fact, the pressure to continue staging this unique conference resulted in ever-less time between conferences (1982, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2003) and only ended when Woodyard announced that when he retired from the University of Kansas in spring 2005 he would also be retiring from his “position” as conference organizer extraordinaire. The April 2005 conference is being organized to celebrate George’s dedication to this event as well as to the field of Latin American theatre, and also to carry on the tradition. We can only hope to emulate George’s generosity, hospitality, and good humor as we prepare for the sixth conference on LATIN AMERICAN THEATRE TODAY. |
